Background Information

  • Osteonecrosis of the 2nd metatarsal head due to a disrupted blood supply.
  • Patients typically complain of forefoot pain localised to the head of the 2nd MT, worse on weight-bearing activity.
  • Examination may reveal swelling with limited ROM at the 2nd MTPJ.

Investigation Guidelines

  • A radiograph is typically required for diagnosis.

Management Recommendations

  • All patients with suspected freibergs disease should be referred for further assessment.
